Freezing cold February 2010...

894?s repaint is now on the back burner awaiting some warmer weather. 2 Pack paint needs 20+ degree temperatures to cure properly and the main hanger neither has the space or the temperature to accommodate this.

It?s fair to say that it was a bit cold when we started work for the first time in 2010?!

All we accomplished before the weather turned even colder (and wetter) was to test the primary Air Speed Indicators in both front and rear cockpits and also the standby Speed Indicator. All very essential when moving at speed!

Also, the wiring has been checked through for the front and rear cockpit Height Level Limit lights. Although we don?t plan on going flying, we thought that they would make a nice feature for cockpit demonstration purposes!

More from February 2010...

Although updates on 894?s progress have been slow this year, the work certainly hasn?t!

The beginning of the year has been spent working on some of the electrics whilst waiting for the new brake accumulator and brake relay valve seals to turn up!
Finally they arrived and both items have been stripped down, inspected and then had the new seal kits fitted.

The accumulator was pressure tested in the same manor as the flying control ones (see earlier post) and has since been re-installed in the aircraft.

Each individual port was tested up to 350psi?

The brake relay valve is the heart of the braking system in the Buccaneer. It allows full differential braking and combined braking during gear retraction. This particular valve is from XV864. I repaired 894?s original one a few years back but unfortunately it has an internal leak!

I have also acquired an inverter which I have programmed to 3 phase, 200 volts at 400Hz. This item now allows me to fully test Buccaneer electrical equipment at home in my workshop. The item fitted in the photo is a HF radio blower which is also from XV864. The one fitted to 894 screeches badly and until now I have been unable to test any replacements!

Incidentally, the ongoing electrical work that I mentioned at the start is quite ambitious. I am trying to get the Strike Sight (heads up display) and the artificial horizon and direction indicators to work. Although I have replaced several fuses and repaired some damaged items the final result still eludes me?!

From yesterday...

We had a very successful time with XX894 today!

My ambitious plans to get the Artificial Horizon and Navigation Display working came to fruition at last!
After spending many hours pouring over the wiring diagrams I narrowed the possible fault down to a 115volt torque switch mounted in one of the junction boxes in the radio bay. This unfortunately has to be one of the most inaccessible items ever fitted to a Buccaneer and my hands now have all the scars to prove it! Fortunately the diagnosis proved right and the flight instruments sprang in to life for the first time in years!

The first video shows the erection cycle of the Artificial Horizon. Its takes about 50 seconds to erect completely and then a further 60 seconds for the yellow fault light to extinguish. You?ll notice the fault light in the top right corner of the display turn from yellow to black when the cycle is complete.

The second video shows the navigation display in operation...

I don?t think I ever posted any photos of the finished Pitot tube so here goes?

A full anti-dept run was carried out later in the day with both engines, all hydraulics and all electrical systems operating perfectly.

Next up is to fit the recently overhauled brake relay valve, get some more fuel and get back out on the runway for some high speed trials!

I also have some very exiting news regarding 894 (well exciting to me at least)! But I?ll post more about this sometime later next week?.

Well here is my exciting news! I have tracked down and purchased two Buccaneer slipper fuel tanks!

Although the tanks belong directly to me I have agreed their long term loan to XX894. They will be repaired, repainted and fitted over the coming weeks.

Just how cool is she going to look roaring down the runway with them both fitted :-D

The tanks are now fitted!!
A little bit of BDR work to be carried out and then a splash of paint to finish off!

The replacement brake relay valve was also fitted today so the next task is to bleed the brakes before setting off down the runway again!

=D> =D> =D> Well do to all the '894 team =D> =D> =D>

She looks like a Buccaneer should now, personally I always thought that the aircraft didn't look complete when not wearing the tanks.

Can't wait to she her in the near future
