RAF Wittering airfield (ICAO identity = EGXT) presents a real challenge for anyone wanting to photograph the resident Harriers of 20(R) Sqn. The airfield is located immediately next to the busy A1, around eight miles northwest of Peterborough and four miles south of Stamford.
Although numerous other viewing locations exist, none of these can be considered worth visiting for photography thanks to either distance or the nature of the busy A1, so we’ll opt for keeping everyone safe and provide details of just two locations – marked as Location (1) and Location (2) on the map.
Location (1) is located off the northbound A1, accessible via the Wittering village junction. Drive through the village and you’ll note the road takes you away from the airfield; look out for a lane to the right with a sign for a pig farm and 'Private Road' sign prominently displayed. The land owners do not generally object to persons using this area, just remember the usual requirements to park sensibly and take your litter away with you. From this location views of the taxiway and hangars are possible at Location (1a).
Location (2) provides the closest possible views of runway 08; from Location (1) continue driving away from Wittering village. At the A47 junction turn right (towards Leicester) then take the next right towards Collyweston. Immediately on your right is a parking area, providing views of aircraft on finals although the aircraft can still be quite high at this point.
Please refer to the RAF Cottesmore viewing guide for an airfield offering excellent Harrier photographic opportunities.
